Africa Day, also known as African Unity Day, is celebrated annually on May 25. It recalls the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), ancestor of the African Union (AU), on May 25, 1963.
On this occasion, the city of Houston welcomed Her Excellency Hilda Suka-Mafudze, the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States, as well as nearly 20 ambassadors from African countries.
The event, hosted annually by Mayor Sylvester Turner, showcases the diversity of the nation’s most populous city. People from all walks of life are invited to join the African community for the time to consider opportunities for commercial exchanges and also to revisit African cultural diversity.
Houston’s Africa Day Reception is produced by the Mayor’s Office of Trade and International Affairs and will also be streamed live on the Mayor’s Office of Trade and International Affairs social media channels
