Between the quiet-quittingburn-out or bore-out, many Anglicisms have invaded the professional world to characterize the reasons for discomfort at work. And if we know roughly what the burn-outwe are clearly much less at the point with the concept of brownout. In France, only 6% of employees say they are ‘committed’ to their work, according to a survey Gallup. What if it was brown-out ?
The brown outit’s what ?
Yes burn out means professional exhaustion linked to an overload of work, and the bore out an under-workload at the origin of a chronic boredom… the brown out is obviously also related to the field of work! And the analogy with electric current is clear. In electricity, a ‘brown-out‘ denotes a voltage drop. And it’s pretty much the same when it comes to work. To put it simply, you suffer from brown-out when your work becomes exhausting because it no longer makes sense. Doctor Francois Baumann*author of “The brown-out: when work no longer has any meaning”compares the phenomenon to a ‘lights out, a power failure’.
Where does the brown-out ?
At the heart of brown-out, there is the fact that one no longer finds meaning in one’s work. And the levers can be many. So the brown out may appear because:
- a gap is created between the vision that we have of our profession and the reality
- the job does not correspond to our values
- Repeating the same tasks creates a sense of wear and tear
- We are not able to complete a project
- We have the impression that our job does not allow us to express our potential.
What are the symptoms of brown out?
You ask yourself how to know if you have brown out ? There is no obvious answer, but some symptoms should raise suspicion*:
- Disappearance of taste for tasks that previously interested us;
- Disinterest in his professional tasks and missions;
- Palpable irritability, exacerbated susceptibility … without justified cause;
- The impression of carrying out counter-productive, vain and useless tasks.
Who can brown out?
According to various works on the subject, the people most affected by the phenomenon would be people with a fairly high level of education, but whose work does not require them to really use their skills and knowledge.
The term of broqwn-out appeared at the same time that the anthropologist David Graeber brought to light bullshit jobs – literally ‘bullshit jobs’ – namely meaningless jobs and not very stimulating and which have multiplied in recent years, such as those of the bureaucracy. The people most likely to feel this phenomenon are those who have the impression that their work does not allow them to express their full potential: which can be frequently the case in many fields where technological advances tend to modernize the job and make it less challenging and interesting.
Brown-out, burn-out et bore-out
The common point ? People who are prone to it all experience work-related exhaustion. But the causes are different:
- In the case of burn-outit is the excess of work which causes the exhaustion of the individual.
- In the case of bore-outis the lack of activity.
- In the case of brown-out it is the absurdity of the tasks and missions, which causes the exhaustion of the worker.
