Specifically, California City Building Regulations require all lockable spaces to be equipped with locks that will automatically unlock the door when the building’s fire suppression system is triggered. Having bought Twitter, Elon Musk began to actively reduce costs, and therefore the emergency conversion of the office into a hotel was accompanied by savings on repairs. As a result, the doors of the 24-hour lockable rooms were equipped with cheaper locks that would not open when the fire alarm went off. One of the employees assigned to supervise this process even chose to quit rather than violate the requirements of state planning regulations.
