A little over a year before the start of the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany (June 14 to July 14), politicians are concerned regarding the cost of the spectacle at the game and final venue in Berlin.

When asked by the House of Representatives, the Senate’s sports administration has already predicted an increase in the estimated expenditure to 64.6 million euros. This was reported by the Berliner Morgenpost. So far, 61 million euros in public funds for organizational tasks have been included in the budget.

Berlin has been a key venue since 1988 during the first European Championship tournament in Germany. The capital will be the venue for three preliminary round games, a round of 16 and a quarterfinal each, as well as the final.

The Berlin EM program should also include many offers for fans. The expected 1.5 million fans from all over Europe should once once more be able to celebrate on a fan mile from the Brandenburg Gate along the entire Straße des 17. Juni. On the Platz der Republik in front of the Reichstag, the construction of a football village as a further meeting place is planned for the EM period.

According to the sports administration, the forecast additional expenditure is not due to miscalculations. Rather, general price increases are the reason for the expected increase in costs by almost six percent.

On the other hand, the Senate continues to assume higher income than expenses in connection with the first major football event on German soil following the World Cup summer fairy tale of 2006. Depending on the attractiveness of the five European Championship games in addition to the final, the Senate expects added value of between 30 and 50 million euros per match day.

According to a report on the state of preparations, “the third largest sporting event in the world will, from experience, achieve a high level of economic added value and have an enormous impact on the image and communication of the state of Berlin”.
