HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — A plane believed to be carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy landed in Hiroshima, Japan, on Saturday ahead of his participation in a global diplomatic summit.

The leaders of the world’s most powerful democracies had invited the president to the G7 meeting as they tighten sanctions that seek to punish Moscow and change the course of its 15-month-old invasion of Ukraine.

Japan indicated that Zelenskyy’s decision to visit Hiroshima was due to his “strong desire” to participate in talks that will influence his country’s defense once morest Russia.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said President Joe Biden and Zelenskyy will maintain direct contact during the summit. Biden announced the day before his support for the training of Ukrainian pilots in US-made F-16 fighters, as a step prior to supplying these aircraft to the Ukrainian Air Force.
