The PC version of The Last of Us Part I, released in March of this year, was not very successful. It was notable for shaky performance, poor image quality on mid-range hardware, and, of course, a lot of errors. Since then, Naughty Dog and PC developer Iron Galaxy have been actively releasing fixes, but have they really improved the experience?

Digital Foundry has taken a fresh look at The Last of Us Part I, and in short, the game is better, but still far from perfect. Moreover, several new problems have appeared. If you have 15 minutes to spare, you can check out the full Digital Foundry review below, or scroll down the page for the highlights.

Let’s start with the good news: The Last of Us Part I has had a complete overhaul of textures. Not only do they look much nicer at medium settings and below, but they also consume less VRAM (1.5 GB less on average, regardless of settings). This means that 8 GB GPUs can now run a pretty decent looking version of the game. Overall, CPU usage also improved by regarding 10% on average, although CPU usage remained regarding the same. This means you’ll see slightly better, but still not outstanding performance (RTX 2070 Super will run at mid-40-50 fps in-game at 1440p and high settings). Stuttering while passing a background thread also remains a problem.

Speaking of stuttering, Naughty Dog and Iron Galaxy reduced the wait time for shaders to compile when first playing The Last of Us Part I (regarding 25 minutes compared to over 40 in the past), but it seems to come at a price. Yes, shader compilation delays have appeared in the game. Not as strong as some other recent PC games, but still quite noticeable at times. Couple that with the continued existence of various bugs and you end up with a game that is now at least playable, but still far from perfect or the same level of polish as the PS5 version. Whether The Last of Us Part I will reach this level on PC is still unknown.
