The most common or well-known Inflammatory Bowel Diseases are Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis that usually affect young populations, however, there is also another condition called microscopic colitis that tends to manifest itself following 50 years of age.
These diseases are chronic, that is, they are for life, and require early diagnosis and adequate treatment that allows patients have a better quality of life.
Therapeutic advances for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
In recent years, the management of these conditions has evolved to the benefit of patients. This was revealed by Dr. Ahmed Morales, a Puerto Rican gastroenterologist and specialist in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

In an interview for the Medicine Magazine and Health Pública, the specialist explained that multiple treatments have been developed for all these pathologies and can be administered in different presentations, allowing the patient to have ample alternatives to participate in their treatment.
“There are many options available to us today, and many more are yet to come. We can offer customers patients oral alternatives that they can ingest; infusions where the medicine is administered to them; also the subcutaneous options where the patient from the community of his house administers the injection”, he affirmed.

Treatments for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases continue to aim to reduce symptoms and inflammation in order to reach remission in the shortest possible time.
Research directed at the inflammatory cascade produced by IBD
Regarding the research that is being carried out in the world to enhance the effects of the treatments, Dr. Morales acknowledged that “everything that is going to come is extremely great and the mechanism of action of these conditions is being investigated, why they are originate and how to attack the inflammatory cascade to offer more convenient and safer treatment alternatives”.
Factors that determine adherence to IBD treatment
With the advent of new and modern drugs, there are two key aspects that will determine the adherence to the treatment of the patients who suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease and are: choosing the most appropriate therapy for each particular case and providing a multidisciplinary service.
In this regard, the gastroenterologist mentioned that in order to provide the most appropriate therapy, “the patient’s lifestyle, the pros and cons of each treatment and the patient’s way of thinking are taken into account. Thus, what is known as a shared decision. We are trying to deviate from paternalistic medicine to get to choose the most appropriate medicine for the patient.”
On the other hand, the Inflammatory Bowel Disease by itself generates a high emotional load in the patientssince they are usually diagnosed at an early age, which is why the multidisciplinary approach allows reducing the number of complications associated with the condition.
“What I have always advocated is that it be a multidisciplinary management, because it is not only the intestine or the esophagus, Crohn’s and colitis of the soul, of the heart, of the brain must be treated. patients Psychologically they are affected by a disease that is for life and for this reason they need attention. This helps to be more adherent to treatment,” emphasized Dr. Morales.

Regarding diagnosis, the most up-to-date criteria for EII they are still laboratory tests, radiology, physical evaluation of the patient, colonoscopy and confirmation through a sample of the patient’s tissue.
