Vienna (OTS) – “Dževad Karahasan, who fled to Austria and who last lived in Graz and Sarajevo, played in different worlds as a matter of course. In the personal encounter in the run-up to the guest country appearance at the Leipzig Book Fair in Berlin, I got to know his great humanity and his humorous acumen. He was undoubtedly one of the great European authors of the present day.His summative reflections in his last novel ‘Einübung ins Schweigen’ regarding life and death and regarding what war does to people makes one believe he had guessed that this would be would be his last work. In a time of division, he evokes dialogue and mediation in his writing. His voice of understanding and tolerance will be greatly missed. My sympathy goes in particular to his family and friends as well as his companions, “so Secretary of State for Art and Culture Andrea Mayer.
