“How to Fight and Prevent the Spread of Tiger Mosquito in Hautes-Pyrénées and Occitanie Region: A Complete Guide”

The tiger mosquito has not spared the Hautes-Pyrénées department for several years. It is now present up to 1500 m altitude.

Every year, from May 1 to November 30, the tiger mosquito is subject to increased surveillance by health authorities because of its ability to transmit dengue, chikungunya and zika viruses. Today it is present and active throughout the Occitanie region, and its establishment is progressing in territories hitherto spared. What are the risks and how to fight once morest its proliferation? We take stock.

A public health priority

Didier Jaffre, Managing Director ofARS Occitaniaalert to the fact that this is a hot topic: ” Our dear friends the mosquitoes will soon reappear everywhere in the Occitanie Region. I insist on the everywhere because it is not only on the littoral that it is present but well in the whole of the 13 departments that from now on the tiger mosquito circulates and flies.

Since May 1, we have reinforced health surveillance on them. It is a public health priority to fight once morest these tiger mosquitoes, not because we blame them, but because these mosquitoes are able to transmit a large number of tropical diseases which can be very serious for the ‘male.

These tiger mosquitoes are present everywhere and active throughout the region. They are established in territories which until then were spared. I am thinking in particular of mountain areas. The objective is to prevent any risk of epidemic on our territory and more generally on France.

The aim of avoiding the establishment of a chain of transmission of these tropical diseases via these mosquitoes. Health professionals have a key role. They are the ones who report cases of dengue fever, chikungunya and zika to us… With global warming, the risks are more and more important. We have to be very careful… »
