Perhaps the time has come to attend to that alarm that sounded, so many times postponed, so many others ignored. The irrefutable numbers this time advanced strongly and broke the barrier: following a long time the mouth world he is encouraged to have that conversation that he previously avoided regarding the future of his stadium. The Bombonera it was small before so much demand. The scenario that housed the most decisive feats in xeneize history beats in each game, but the number of partners that are left out are an indicator to project another solution. That’s how he interprets it Andres Ibarracandidate for President of Boca Juniors in the December elections, who advanced to LA NACION all his proposal on the construction of a new stadium in Casa Amarilla: “it will be connected by an artery -bridge- to the current Bombonera”, he commented.
In all its categories, the club has 315,879 members according to the latest report presented to the Argentine Football Association. This implies that if everyone had the right to enter the stadium on match day, close to 80% would be left outside. That is why today, only those who belong to the asset category have the privilege of going to the court. Of course, even so, it is necessary to regulate it. That is why the Institution created the “filter” resource, a maneuver that only opens the doors for those who have attended a certain number of matches. And that’s not all. As ability continued to be the issue, a new nook was created in this maze: the recurring partner. To put it bluntly, going to see Boca became an odyssey.
“There are two or three things that influence the issue of the stadium to be addressed. One, of course, is to always look and seek to be at the forefront. And Boca, on that subject, unfortunately lost the vanguard. Boca is the biggest, even if River fans don’t like it, but he has to be the biggest in everything. And today regarding the infrastructure and the stadium we have lost the leadership. And with another factor: this management made, in this period, 107,000 new adherent members. 107,000! Without having given a solution for the stadium”, Ibarra begins by explaining.
And he adds: “Then, the assets grew, by more than 12,000; The adherents grew and on top of that we have the same stadium, with infrastructure problems, which is why they closed us down. That shows lack of skill in management, bad management. Because if in parallel to making 107,000 new adherent members (they are charged half the fee) and you don’t have a sponsor, that falls into the price of the membership fee or the crazy increases that they applied to the subscribers. If in 2020 they had started the project to expand the Bombonera, which was the objective they had with the ‘360 project’, but no… They did nothing. That combo is explosive. And what happens today with the filters happens, with the complaints from active members who cannot enter. That is why the stadium is a central issue and of which we have a solution. It is a central issue for Boca and that is how it should be understood by the partner ”.

For many years there has been talk of projects to reform the Bombonera and none of them might come to fruition. Why are Boca fans this time going to believe that this new stadium project is possible? “We are very much obliged that this decision be true, final and enforceable. I got tired of seeing cute models too. The difference is that we, in these months, and if we were already managing the club, and we had the faculties of the institution, we would already see everything for the presentations. The entire project is already assembled, the corresponding presentations in the different organizations of the City of Buenos Aires. And of course the presentation in the Legislature to obtain the rezoning and the use of two streets that are there. This is step by step”, argues Ibarra.
“The stands will have a cut” in scales “identical to the Bombonera that will guarantee the same acoustics and heartbeat,” says Ibarra. It is also reported that the playing field will have exactly the same measurements as it does today. And that the new Bombonera is going to have the same spirit as the current one. “It will be a tribute to Delpini, the Civil Engineer in charge of the construction in the 1930s”.
The point of the “rezoning”, mentioned above by Ibarra, is not just another detail. In September 2014, a bill presented by Oscar Moscariello, vice president of Angelici, entered the Buenos Aires Legislature, but he might not move forward with the idea. Ibarra is confident that the same will not happen to him: “We have all the artillery prepared so that from day 1 we focus on this. Everything that depends, that we can do, from outside of Boca (because today we do not have the responsibility) advances. Putting together the project, designing, comparing with stadiums in the world, with the best solutions out there. We are doing everything so that on the first day of the management we can present all the corresponding approvals to ensure that in the four years of management we have the stadium running”.
– Aren’t you afraid of being trapped in red tape?
-No no. I am convinced. We have a first-rate team. We are management people and we will do whatever is necessary in terms of procedures, insistence, perseverance to obtain the necessary approvals. The Boca world is going to help us. We are not going to have any serious problem that will stop us from building the project.
-What are the estimated times for the project?
-We are going to have regarding 8 months of managing administrative approvals in the City and in the Legislature, that also means explaining, convincing. But every time we have a meeting we are going to give the member the information online, to show him the evolution of this. And following the approvals, as soon as we can lay the foundation stone, that’s where we’ll start. And construction can take anywhere from two and a half to three years. That is why I estimate that in four years we will have the issue resolved. And it will not be another model.
-The adherent partner is from the management of Angelici. Was there a boomerang effect?
-But he was born with a criterion… Also, there is the responsibility of the leader. You can’t make 107,000 supporters in these three years when you don’t provide a solution for them in parallel, since in 95% of cases they want to go to the pitch. Because that’s how the adherent was born, by the will to go to the field. But at that moment it was said: “Stop, active partners, we have this capacity. I make you an adherent, but I warn you: you are an adherent, you cannot enter the field. But in 5 years you will be able to enter the field ”. Now, making 107,000 adherents out of a single serve is irresponsible.
-How is the project for the new Bombonera?
-The new stadium will be in Casa Amarilla, next to La Bombonera and will have a capacity for 105.000 personas. And one of the virtues, in addition to the greater capacity, is that it will be connected with an artery (bridge) with the current Bombonera. La Bombonera has a leading place, but we aim to have a new stadium. The solution is comprehensive, it will be in Casa Amarilla, 220 meters from the current stadium. They will be connected by different. And on game days, which will be played in the new stadium, we will put up screens in the Bombonera so that people can experience it as a fan fest, with first-rate screens and technology. And if today the screens have a definition of very good quality, in four years you will be able to see the game with absolute reality. In addition, the current Bombonera would be used for the reserve, women’s soccer and lower divisions to play.
-What would be the investment in dollars for the new stadium that will be built next to the Bombonera and where would the money come from?
-Even with the difficulties that exist in Argentina to estimate the cost of projects of this type, an investment of the order of 390 million dollars. It is expected to finance the new stadium with the increment generated by the new boxes, subscriptions, stalls and parking lots, pre-selling them for approximately 5 to 6 years. In addition, anticipated income from the future “naming” of the new stadium is also considered, plus other income associated with commercial aspects.
-What does the fan say according to their surveys? Would he accept moving out of the Bombonera?
-This is evolving and everyone is complaining. It is a fear and today it is at a priority level. I go to the pitch and when one fan doesn’t stop you, the other stops you. They tell me: ‘This is no more’. The other day, in the match with Racing, they told me: ‘I am active but I don’t get to the filter anymore. Because I have 12 games instead of 14 or 16. I come because a friend lent me an audience, otherwise I can’t’. And not to mention the members, who arrive earlier each time to be able to enter. Boca lacks another solution. Always respecting the feeling for the Bombonera. In addition, with this project, the current Bombonera would continue to be played until the other stadium is finished.
For many years, different Boca leaders tried to remodel the current Bombonera. How many times has the two half apples been mentioned? To buy the houses neighboring the boxes to make a new grandstand so that a large expansion of spectators can be generated. And more than one project was put on the table. But it was never possible to advance. This time Ibarra is convinced that he will be able to give Boca a new stadium, without having to move from the neighborhood and he is even going for a better project.
