The SPÖ member survey on the party chairmanship and the top candidate in the next National Council election is entering the home straight on Monday. The sealed boxes with the questionnaires will be picked up from Lower Austria in the morning – accompanied by members of the election commission, the party announced on Friday. From 10 a.m. onwards, the commission will not meet with the media at the Renner Institute. It is not possible to estimate how long it will take until the results are announced.
This is to take place following the meeting in the Novotel next to the Renner Institute. In addition to the ballot papers, data carriers with the results of online voting must also be evaluated. In addition, samples are drawn for verification.
The current party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner, the Burgenland governor Hans Peter Doskozil and the Traiskirchner mayor and federal councilor Andreas Babler or, as an additional option, none of the three candidates stood for election. A total of around 148,000 party members were able to cast their votes. However, the final decision on the future presidency will not be made until the SPÖ party conference in early June – this body is formally responsible for the election of the presidency.
However, Rendi-Wagner and Doskozil have already made it clear that they will also accept the members’ vote if none of the applicants receive an absolute majority. Babler, in turn, would also run for second or third place in the member survey at the party congress, should the gap to the first be small.
