The director saw another actor in the title role.
In the late 60s, Eldar Ryazanov’s tape “Zigzag of Fortune” was released on the big screens. The main role of the photographer Vladimir Oreshnikov was played by the charming Yevgeny Leonov.
Few people know, but initially Ryazanov saw Innokenty Smoktunovsky in this image. According to his plan, the main character should be a prominent and attractive man. However, Smoktunovsky suddenly fell ill and therefore refused to shoot.
Ryazanov was in a stupor. He didn’t know who else might fill the role. The director invited many famous artists to audition: Sergei Shakurov, Alexander Shirvindt and Andrei Mironov. But in the end, the victory in this tacit competition went to Evgeny Leonov.
At first, the artistic council rejected his candidacy due to ineffective appearance. However, Ryazanov defended Evgeny Pavlovich. The director did not arrange additional tests and in every possible way played for time, and the management eventually reconciled with Leonov.
So the main character became a charming plump, and not a tall “compass”. Leonov’s height was 165 centimeters, and Smoktunovsky – 186. If Innokenty Mikhailovich starred in the film, it would be a completely different character both in texture and energy.
