As the electric counterpart to the GLS luxury off-road vehicle, the EQS SUV is at the top of the Mercedes-Benz model hierarchy. And just like its classically powered sister model, it is now crowned by a highly sophisticated variant. It goes by the name Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV – and offers every conceivable luxury.
The 484 kW (650 hp) electric drive catapults the almost three-tonne SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds, at 210 km/h it is limited. The range is up to 600 kilometers, not least thanks to the heat pump and a drag coefficient of just 0.29. The electrically powered Maybach is therefore suitable for the motorway, but even more: It should also do a respectable job off-road and on dunes. That, we are told, is a clear requirement from the important Middle East markets. Incidentally, with the appropriate rear-axle steering, the turning circle shrinks to a total of 11 meters. So this Maybach is also suitable for the city.
But most important, that much is clear, are comfort and luxury, which with this brand may well cross the threshold of the ostentatious. After all, you position yourself at the top, next to the brands Bentley and Rolls-Royce, of which, by the way, there is still no electric SUV.
And so Maybach logos are emblazoned everywhere, the front is designed independently with a face that radiates elegance and in no way wants to distinguish itself as a “lane clearer”. Light effects and generous chrome applications characterize the exterior and interior, the rear spoiler with chrome stripes is a small bow to technology and aerodynamics. The typical Maybach two-tone paintwork will also be available here – as a not-so-cheap option.
Tech zone in front, relaxation in the back: the rear exudes the Art Deco style with appropriate lighting. Roof pillars and seats are positioned in such a way that you don’t sit in the direct field of view of the paparazzi. The champagne compartment can be fitted with solid silver goblets from Robbe & Berking, and a refrigerator is also available.
Appropriately, there is also a Maybach-specific sound and the corresponding scent, which goes by the name “Number 12 Mood Ebony”. The parcel shelf is fixed in order to optimize the acoustics, with the 4D system the Dolby Atmos sound experience can be perfectly savored.
Pure luxury in this SUV, whose electric drive should also ensure that distinguished customers always have a good environmental conscience. (cen/Matthias Knoedler)
