Bank fraud: a new scam! Since banking operations require double authentication, scammers have come up with a new trick: spoofing the bank advisor’s phone number, called “spoofing”. Fraudsters call customers by showing the number of their bank advisor to validate fraudulent transactions.

How to protect yourself once morest this scam? Julien Lasalle, secretary of the Observatory for the Security of Means of Payment (OSMP), asked this question during a press conference organized on May 16 at the Banque de France. The purpose of this conference was to present thirteen recommendations for the reimbursement of fraudulent payment transactions.

These recommendations were adopted by a working group formed by the Governor of the Banque de France. This working group, which brought together consumer associations, banking mediators and payment service providers, met five times between October 2022 and February 2023. This initiative was taken following the complaint filed by the UFC-Que Choisir once morest twelve banks that systematically refuse to reimburse their customers who are victims of fraud.

Scam: Technically and legally

The last recommendation concerns spoofing. She says tech companies, such as phone carriers, need to protect users from the risk of identity theft. However, it does not say that companies should prevent hidden callers, as this is not yet technologically and legally possible, according to Lasalle.

The speaker said that sometimes it is acceptable to replace a general and long number with a specific number, such as EDF advisers who all use the same number. He said fixing this problem will take time. He also reminded everyone that on March 28, 2023, the Versailles Court of Appeal ordered refunds for customers affected by this issue.
