Dear friend, dear friend,
Your kidneys are precious.
These are ultra-stressed organs. But fortunately, in general, they respond present.
There are different ways to help them, as we will see later.
You have two kidneys. They each have the shape of a bean 10 to 15 centimeters long and they each weigh around 160 grams(1).
Your kidneys belong to a larger whole: the urinary system(1).
The latter has the bladder, two channels that go from the kidneys to the bladder, which doctors call the ureters, and a last channel that allows the evacuation of urine. This is the urethra(1).
This system ensures the treatment and disposal of wastewater within your organization.
It works 24 hours a day, even when you are sleeping, even when you are dreaming or at the movies!
A vital and multifunctional organ!
The kidneys are known for their role as filters, but that is not their only major function.
Here are their three main roles in your organization:
- Your kidneys regulate the amount of water present in your body. The latter constantly needs a precise quantity of water. The kidneys maintain this quantity and eliminate the excess(2).
- They eliminate waste and toxins present in your organism. In doing so, they also maintain the proper balance of minerals in your blood. Excess phosphorus, potassium or sodium are removed(2).
- Your kidneys produce hormones which participate in the regulation of your blood pressure and the production of red blood cells. This function also allows you to regulate your level of calcium present in the body.(2).
This waste that your kidneys filter!
In 24 hours, your kidneys process regarding 200 liters of fluid(3) !
And during this process, they eliminate many wastes, the main ones being:
- urea, from protein degradation(4) ;
- uric acid, produced by the breakdown of cells or purines, proteins provided by food and in particular foods such as red meat and poultry, game, fish, asparagus, organ meats, mushrooms and mussels(5) ;
- creatinine, which is a waste product of creatine, a muscle protein; athletes eliminate more than others(6,7) ;
- chemical food additives, especially present in processed industrial products such as supermarket charcuterie, pizzas, biscuits, etc.; avoid, in particular, phosphoric acid (E338) and sodium phosphate (E339) harmful to the kidneys(8,9) ;
- pesticides, which poison the kidneys and can cause them to malfunction(10) ;
- the alcohol, because it increases the risk of kidney failure while raising blood pressure(11) ;
- toxins which are better eliminated if you drink enough water and eat draining foods, such as dandelion, black radish or lemon(12) ;
- drug residues which come, for example, from analgesics or painkillers such as aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), molecules once morest stomach ailments, certain antihypertensives, chemotherapy, etc.(13).
- heavy metals such as cadmium found in food (cereals) or lead(14).
The main causes of chronic kidney failure
Doctors speak of kidney failure when the activity of the kidneys drops and the filtering role of these organs is no longer as well assured.(3).
Age remains the first cause of decreased kidney activity and this factor affects everyone, even if we are not equal in aging(15) !
Added to this are metabolic diseases such as obesity or type I and type II diabetes, which accentuate the phenomenon.
Similarly, gout, which is an excess of uric acid in the blood, increases the risk of kidney failure.(15).
High blood pressure or autoimmune diseases can also influence a reduction in kidney activity(15).
Finally, one of the most common causes in France is the consumption of medication!
Signs of a malfunction
Urine can give indications of how the kidneys are working.
If it is frothy or dark or still laden with blood, it may indicate weak kidneys.(3).
In any case, if you have any doubts regarding these symptoms, you can consult your doctor.
Added to this can be severe fatigue or anemia as well as high blood pressure.(3).
Too much fatigue can lead to the use of dialysis(3,16).
In this case, the patient uses a machine that helps to overcome the deficiencies of the kidneys.
Dialysis lasts between two and four hours depending on whether it is done every day or several times a week and allows you to do what the kidneys no longer do well enough: treat, filter and eliminate waste from the blood.(16).
protective habits
In order to protect your kidneys, the best solution is not to stress them too much, which is not always easy.
The list of wastes that the kidneys help eliminate that I gave you above gives you an idea of the products that you should avoid or limit to spare your kidneys.
It is good to avoid consuming too much protein at once, whether animal or vegetable(7,9).
Either way, they work your kidneys.
The ideal is to consume protein regularly, but in small quantities(7,9).
Similarly, exposure to food additives and pesticides is harmful(7,9).
This means that you must, as much as possible and according to your means, prefer quality products, organic or from sustainable agriculture and cook yourself!
Likewise, too much salt or alcohol is not good for your kidneys.
The water you drink matters too. You need enough and good quality. If you have any doubts regarding tap water, do not hesitate to filter it in order to purge the hydrocarbons(17).
Doctors often advise to be careful with fat, salt and sugar(7,9).
Their obsession is the aperitif biscuit which contains all this at the same time and which is swallowed without our thinking regarding it even before the meal!
If you do not necessarily have control over what is offered to you, you can, for your aperitifs, offer alternatives to your guests.
Personally, I like to use slices of raw, organic cucumber or zucchini on which I spread cheese.
Finally, some herbal teas help the kidneys to function.
Herbalists use for example: cherry stalks, meadowsweet, dandelion, birch, fennel, quackgrass, thyme or hibiscus(18).
And there’s nothing like a good daily walk to help your whole body work properly!
Naturally yours,
