Interview with The Ocean: Collaborating with Karin Park and the Freedom of Working with Pelagic Records

For this new album, you called on Karin Park, a Norwegian singer who performs on “Unconformities”. Robin confessed to being a fan following releasing three of his albums and attending live performances at Roadburn. Did you know his work? And how did this collaboration take place?

Yes, I knew her because we had toured together in 2019 with Herod et Oar breach, his group. She’s an incredible artist, she has a spectacular voice. We actually worked remotely. And it’s funny because that track, “Unconformities,” was the only one I didn’t like too much. We tried to work on it with Robin to find melodies for the verse, but I wasn’t convinced. So we decided to send it to Karin, saying “we’ll see what happens”. We had already worked like that with Jonas [Renkse de Katatonia qui intervenait sur les deux disques précédents NDLR]. And when we received the result, it was great. Because we didn’t give him any direction at all, we gave him carte blanche. That’s how the magic works. It’s a great song and his vocal line is very beautiful. I hope we will have the opportunity to do this song together live one day. I’m not saying it will happen, but I would love to!

Knowing that this album is the sequel to Phanerozoic I et II, you also didn’t want to call on Jonas once more. You didn’t want to repeat yourself?

Yes, the question did not even arise. We really wanted a female voice, that was really the idea.

I imagine that live, you will interpret Karin’s vocal parts, as you do on the tracks where Jonas intervened in the studio?

Yes I can imagine (laughs). I haven’t thought regarding it too much. I think if this is the case, I will have to work on it by taking its edge line a little lower (laughs).

Your new album, like the previous ones, is released by Pelagic Records, the label created by Robin. In particular, this allows you to offer superb editions, vinyl boxes and surprising visuals. This situation gives you an artistic freedom that we imagine is particularly comfortable for you…

I’ll be honest, but if by artistic freedom you mean the way we should sound, you have to know that even when we were at Metal blades, no one told us what to do. Finally, it is the first disc which leaves only on the label created by Robin, so I don’t know exactly how things will turn out. Well, yes, I know it’s going to be fine because it’s the label of Robin, and that there is no reason for it to go wrong. The difference for us is above all that Metal blades is a juggernaut among music labels in terms of distribution and exposure. Youtube page of metal blades, more than a million people are subscribers. So, for sure, when they release your clips, it will reach a wider audience. At the house of Pelagic, it’s not the same numbers but it’s a label that has only been growing for years and that clearly has its place.

And it allows you to tour with artists from the label…

Yes, that’s the big advantage, because we tour with artists we appreciate. This is particularly the case for the concerts we gave with Herod, Psychonaut and others. It’s good for everyone!

Speaking of exposure, you released the clip for “Parabiosis”, in which you all film. We feel that you had a lot of fun doing it!

Yes, and we did it during our North American tour, on our only two days off! (laughs) The part of the clip shot in the snow was in Montreal and the rest in Los Angeles. It was grueling but the session was awesome. For another music video regarding to be released for “Subatlantic”, we shot part of it in Puerto Rico. It was also a great experience. But it requires a lot of investment because it happens during the tour.
