The Würth Collection contains around 300 works by Jose de Guimaraes, including the “African Alphabet”, which consists of 132 symbolic figures and is considered the artist’s key work. It can be seen in its entirety in the exhibition in the Art Room Würth Austria in Böheimkirchen. Another focus of the exhibition is on the pictures from the Mexico series created in the 1990s.
Elisabeth Kreuzhuber, the curator of the exhibition: “The work of Jose de Guimaraes shows a profound examination of his own culture and that of other peoples, whose visual communication he studies in order to incorporate it into his work. In addition to Africa, it is the cultures of Mexico and Asia, especially those of China and Japan, that inspire him to create large groups of works.”
An artist yet to be discovered in Austria
Jose de Guimaraes, born Jose Maria Fernandes Marques in Guimaraes in 1939, took the name of his native city at the beginning of his artistic career. “Highly esteemed internationally, Guimaraes is an outstanding personality in contemporary Portuguese art that has yet to be discovered in this country,” says Kreuzhuber.
In addition to his technical studies, Guimaraes also takes painting and drawing classes. In 1967 he had to go to the former Portuguese colony of Angola during his military service. According to Würth’s website regarding the artist, the intensive contact with the African culture, which was shaped by oral tradition, was decisive for the young artist’s entire later work.
