Amidst the rain, preparations for the commemoration are being made in a calm atmosphere.
Since it is early, there are no bereaved families or mourners yet.
Police and other officials are busy moving.
The theme of this commemorative ceremony is ‘The spirit of May, together with the people’.
This commemorative ceremony sheds light on the “Mothers of May” who lost their loved ones due to the 5.18 Democratization Movement or who protected families struggling with pain.
The national anthem sung by the choir is sung by students from Jihan Elementary School in Junam Village, where a bus shooting occurred in 1980.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs explained that this commemorative event was prepared with the meaning of warmly comforting the pain of Gwangju and advancing toward a tomorrow of harmony.
Unlike last year, it is expected that regarding 3,000 people, including bereaved families and government officials, will attend due to the government’s easing of COVID-19 quarantine measures.
Previously, the eve of the May 18 Memorial Ceremony was held yesterday at Geumnam-ro.
The Great March for Democracy and Peace was held with the participation of more than 3,000 people, including Gwangju citizens, families of victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, and Koreans. Members of Mothers of May made rice balls that Gwangju citizens who fought once morest martial law 43 years ago made and shared, and distributed them to citizens.
Also, blood donation events were reenacted to share blood with the injured at the time.
Former President Moon Jae-in was the first former president to visit the May 18 Democratic Cemetery on the anniversary.
