The key to a successful sex scene? Don’t let your partner think you’re taking advantage of the situation, says Michael Douglas, mocking the need for “intimacy coordinators.”

During a meeting with the public as part of the Cannes Film Festival, the star of “Basic Instinct” quipped that “today, nothing can be done without resorting to intimacy coordinators” , which have appeared in recent years to ensure that actors are preserved on all intimate stages.
But the 78-year-old American actor, who joked that he had become “an expert when it comes to sex scenes”, claimed that the “secret is the rehearsals”.

“It’s like when you rehearse a fight scene, you have to work out the choreography. You start very slow and then you get into a faster pace,” he said.
“When you’re doing a love scene, it’s important that the actress doesn’t think you’re taking advantage of the situation. You tell them up front: I’m going to put my hand here, you put your hand there and then we kiss,” the “Fatal Liaison” star added.
“If you succeed, it will seem spontaneous, while everything is very well choreographed,” he said.
The actor, who received an honorary Palme d’or on Tuesday, remembered with humor the release in 1992 of “Basic Instinct”, one of his five films which had been presented at Cannes.
The explicit sexual scenes were “unique, even for France”, he laughed. “Seeing these sex scenes on the biggest screen I’ve ever seen… And then we had a very quiet dinner followingwards. Everyone was digesting the film,” he recalled, causing laughter in the room.
He explained that many actresses had turned down the role, following director Paul Verhoeven warned them there would be “a lot of nudity”.
Michael Douglas felt that Sharon Stone, the other star of the sulphurous film, was “fantastic”.

The actress had revealed in recent years that the director had not respected his consent concerning a scene where his intimacy is revealed.
Michael Douglas also spoke fondly of his father, Kirk Douglas, recalling that the legendary actor had met his wife Anne in Cannes.
“Before social media, we had more secrets, secret meetings, without anyone knowing,” he said.
“I was talking regarding this with Leo DiCaprio: today someone sees you and suddenly there are 1,000 people there. You no longer have the freedom we had before,” he said.
