Late last year, we reported that Apple was considering making iPads already India as a way to lessen its dependence on China. Details such as an alleged lack of skilled labor in the country and other fiscal factors, however, were placed as some of the main obstacles to the execution of this plan.
Well then, according to information from BloombergApple may be closer than ever to bringing the production of its tablets to the Asian country once and for all – remembering that the company already manufactures some iPhones and is preparing to produce AirPods there.
More specifically, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has agreed to increase to 170 billion rupees (approximately US$2 billion) the incentive for companies that decide to take their production chains to India. Until then, this incentive was 73.5 billion rupees (~US$1.02 billion).
Despite contemplating any company, this measure clearly has Apple as its main objective, which has already asked the government to triple the incentives for the manufacture of laptops, tablets and other personal computers. According to the rules of this incentive, approved in 2021, companies are entitled to a kind of cashback which goes from until 5% of the value of sales of devices manufactured in India.
India, it should be noted, is already responsible for manufacturing 7% of all iPhones sold in the world and has been trying for some years to establish itself as an attractive manufacturing center by capitalizing on trade disputes involving the United States and China. As the incentive — in addition to tablets — mentions laptops and other personal computers, it is not impossible that we see some movement from Apple also in the sense of taking the production of one of its MacBooks to the country.
So let’s wait.
