While a project to build an oil pipeline by TotalEnergies in Uganda and Tanzania is taking shape and mobilizing environmental activists, Ifop for Avaaz has questioned the eyes of the French, and more specifically of Crédit Agricole customers – the first financial support of the company – on these investments.
It thus appears that nearly one out of four Crédit Agricole customers (39%) plans to leave the bank if it continues to finance companies developing oil and gas projects. We find a similar proportion among the French as a whole (42%), a sign that public opinion remains sensitive to environmental themes and the investment orientations of their banking establishments.
The latter are indeed expected on these subjects since it is nearly 37% of French people (and 70% if we only consider people with an opinion) who want Crédit Agricole to encourage the company TotalEnergies to stop this project. A wish reinforced among young people (43% of 18-24 year olds), university graduates (49%) and supporters of Europe Ecologie Les Verts (68%), segments most concerned regarding the preservation of the environment.
