Most likely, despite the appearance of laptops with GeForce RTX 40 graphics, models with GeForce RTX 3060 will be popular in our country for a long time. There is nothing surprising in this: on sale you will find many different modifications of such laptops, and the performance of the NVIDIA graphics processor is enough to comfortably play modern AAA projects. Model MAIBENBEN X558 attracted our attention with a good combination of price and gaming performance. The laptop has an 8-core Ryzen 7 5800H processor and a mobile version of the GeForce RTX 3060, the power limits of which are twisted almost to the maximum.

#Specifications, equipment and software

Let’s immediately discuss a couple of interesting points related to the X558. On the photos and screenshots, you will find the name MECHREVO – the first batch of X558 was created in collaboration with MECHREVO. Laptops sold in China and Russia are completely identical in terms of hardware and functionality. The GeForce RTX 3060 mobile graphics installed in the X558 runs at almost maximum power – 130 watts in Dynamic Boost mode.

The Intel AX200NGW module, which supports 802.11b/g/n/ac/ax and Bluetooth 5.1, is responsible for the wireless connection in the laptop. The bandwidth of the Realtek RTL8168/8125 WLAN controller is 2.5 Gbps.

The laptop comes with an external 180W power supply.

#Appearance and input devices

MAIBENBEN X558 looks strict. However, gaming laptops in general have long ceased to be associated with frilly shapes and catchy designs. The body of the hero of the review is entirely made of matte gray plastic. In my opinion, the Chinese laptop turned out to be non-marking.

There are no complaints regarding the build quality either. The laptop keyboard does not flex. The display lid opens up to regarding 130 degrees, making it easy to lift with one hand. The design uses rather tight hinges that do not allow the screen to dangle during work and games.

In terms of specs, the X558 is a modern laptop by 2023 standards. This game “tag” weighs a little less than two kilograms; case thickness is 24 mm. The display lid on the sides received rather thin bezels – 6 mm.

The webcam of the device is located where it should be – on top. It uses a 720p matrix. Relatively good image quality can only be obtained in clear sunny weather.

The location of the connectors on the X558 case indirectly indicates that the laptop was developed by the manufacturer as a replacement for a home desktop. So, on the back of the case there is an HDMI output, an Ethernet port from a 2.5-gigabit Realtek controller, a connector for connecting an external PSU, and a USB 3.2 Gen2 C-type port. On the sides there are USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 Gen1 A-type ports, a pair of 3.5 mm headset jacks and an SD card reader.

Well, the functionality of the X558, especially considering the price of the device, is my respect! I note that the Type-C port is located exactly at the back. It is compatible with DisplayPort video output. If desired, you can buy a docking station and expand the functionality of the laptop.

The X558 keyboard received a digital block. Against the backdrop of the recently tested MSI Sword 15, I would even call it a full-fledged one. Yet here, for example, there are no full-sized plus and minus buttons; End is self-sufficient, but Home is less fortunate. The function keys are also small. Next to the power button is the X558 operating mode switch button. The laptop supports three behavior patterns: “Turbo”, “Gaming” and “Office” – more regarding them in the second part of the article.

The keyboard is well suited for games: it received large Shift, Enter, right Ctrl and arrow buttons. Pressing the buttons is almost silent and with a noticeable tactile resistance of the switch. The keyboard is equipped with four-level RGB backlighting, but there is no zonal backlighting setting. The keyboard backlight is configured in the Control Center application.

And the X558 is equipped with a medium-sized touchpad – with sides of 74 and 116 mm. I have no questions regarding the operation of the touch panel.

#Internal arrangement and upgrade options

The bottom panel of the laptop can be easily removed. The laptop has good upgrade options.

The cooling system of the main components of the laptop consists of four heat pipes, a pair of fans and four copper radiators. Air is blown out both at the back and at the sides. At the same time, the CPU and X558 graphics are cooled together, and not separately. So, in games, a heating GPU will definitely share heat with an 8-core Ryzen – and vice versa.

As already mentioned, the assembly has a pair of DDR4-3200 modules with a total capacity of 32 GB. The X558 uses a Crucial kit. The Kingston SSD is also installed here – not the fastest NVMe model. And an adapter is installed in the second M.2 slot, which allows you to purchase a 2.5-inch drive to the X558 over time. I did not find any mounting screws in the kit, but all the necessary cables are available. Given the cost of today’s SSDs, it’s easier to buy another M.2 drive.
