DETROIT (AP) — Michael Lorenzen struck out a season-high seven in six innings, while Spencer Torkelson added a pair of doubles as the Detroit Tigers beat the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. for 4-0.
Lorenzen (2-2) allowed 5 hits, walked two and has allowed just two runs in his last three starts. Will Vest relieved two scoreless innings, as well as dishing out three strikeouts, while Jose Cisnero pitched the ninth.
Torkelson scored a run and drove in another. Riley Green had three hits.
Shut out for the second time in three games, Pittsburgh has lost 12 of 14 games, scoring just 22 runs. Dominican Luis Ortiz (0-2) allowed four runs – three of them earned – and seven hits in 3 innings.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Javier Báez’s RBI single and Torkelson’s RBI double.
Ortiz gave up a couple of runs in the third inning when Spencer Torkelson scored on Ortiz’s misthrow trying to put out Akil Badoo, and then on a wild pitch that Badoo took advantage of.
For the Tigers, Puerto Rican Javier Báez batted 1-for-4, with an RBI; Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera batted 3-1; and Cuban Andy Ibáñez batted 0-for-4.
For the Pirates, Dominican Carlos Santana batted 3-1; and the Venezuelan Tucipita Marcano batted 4-1.
