A complex situation was experienced inside the Neuquén Detention Unit No. 11 this Tuesday, when several inmates from pavilion 4 began to set mattresses on fire and to break part of the facilities. The situation lasted several hours and required the face-to-face intervention of the Criminal Enforcement judge, Raquel Gass.
The spark that ignited the tense scene was a general search that had to be carried out in space as part of the routines. There, three cell phones were identified, elements that are prohibited according to the prison regulations of the unit. The rumor of the kidnapping of the devices spread quickly through the pavilion and they began to show their anger.
“They locked the doors, lit mattresses, clothes and caused some damage”told RÍO NEGRO the chief commissioner and director of detention units, Ricardo Caro.
The events began around noon and continued until following 6:00 p.m. in a context of hostility between the inmates and the prison staff who were unable to establish order.
In this way, the intervention of the Criminal Execution judge, Raquel Gass, who in the company of Caro, met with two representatives of pavilion 4 was requested.
“After a long talk, the judge gave them the legal arguments for which they cannot count on cell phones and the inmates agreed to restore order”Caro explained.
Gradually the escalation of the conflict began to subside and the prison workers were able to continue with the procedure.
Despite the fact that there were clashes, “following carrying out the medical checks we can confirm that there were no injuries,” the policeman said.
“The most unfortunate thing is that pavilion 4 had been conditioned recently and following a long-standing request, it has now been affected by smoke and fire”Caro counted.
