Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, described the issuance of an international arrest warrant by the French judiciary once morest him as a “clear violation of the laws,” according to the official Lebanese News Agency.
The National News Agency quoted Salama as saying in a statement, Tuesday, that the decision “constitutes par excellence a violation of the most basic laws, since the judge did not observe the legal deadlines stipulated in French law, despite her notification and certainty of that. Salameh’s statements came following news to Agence France-Presse regarding the issuance of an international arrest warrant today, by the French judge in charge of investigating Salameh’s money and property in Europe, following his absence from his interrogation session in Paris.
The judge had summoned Riad Salameh to appear before her during a hearing on Tuesday, when Salameh was expected to face preliminary charges of money laundering, embezzlement of public funds and using some of them to buy real estate owned by him, according to news reports.
Riad Salameh has held his position as Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon since August 1993, and his term ends in May 2023.
