If Steam has long made it easy for players to get refunds for their games, it seems that a new option allows you to test a title for free for 90 minutes, without having to buy it. An excellent idea!

Steam has been offering a game refund system for several years, to say the least. It’s very simple: if you bought it less than 15 days ago and if you played it for less than two hours, the platform will refund you in full! A particularly practical measure if the title turns out to be disappointing, if you don’t like it, if it is full of bugs or if your PC cannot run it. The problem is that many players use and abuse it, while the refund system was initially not designed for so many requests. It seems that Valve has planned to solve this problem by allowing you to play each title for 90 minutes, without paying a single penny or doing any work – the remaining free play time is indicated on the game page. from that offered by the PlayStation Plus Premium, which allows you to preview certain PS5 games for two hours.

Steam: a function tested on Dead Space

This system offers several advantages, especially for AAA games – the blockbusters that have high production and marketing costs. Indeed, he would avoid unpleasant surprises when launching certain games. Recently, Star Wars Jedi Survivor et The Last of Us Part 1 have stood out for their numerous bugs and their particularly greedy minimum configuration – a situation which is not unlike that ofAssassin’s Creed Unity, which was literally unplayable when it was released in 2014! Moreover, unlike the demos offered separately by the developers, it can be assumed that the progress made in the trial version will be transferred to the game once purchased. Finally, the process is simpler than that of requesting a refund, which might discourage some players.

For now, this option is very favorably received by players, as can be seen on the forum ReserEra, although it raises many questions. Let’s calm our ardor a little, however, because only the 2023 remake of Dead Space, the famous horror game, has the right to this function for the moment. We know that Capom is used to offering this kind of demos with the Resident Evil, but it is a very different approach from that of Valve. We must therefore see if the latter will succeed in forcing developers and publishers to offer mandatory demos and, if so, how quickly other games will be able to benefit from this kind of free trial.
