Women in theatre: Face to Face with Society

When a woman stands on stage, she chooses in one way or another a direct confrontation with the ideas that limit her in society.

This week’s episode of “Duniana” discusses the presence of women in theater in the Arab world. The idea is presented from two angles: the angle of its participation in the theatrical production industry, writing, directing, acting and producing, and the angle of its embodiment on stage and its impact on the audience.

Does direct contact with the audience limit the power of physical expression of women on stage? Does the direct relationship with the audience across the stage makes taboos bigger for women? How does the audience interact with them on stage? Does the actress on stage feel self-censored? Was there stereotyping of women in the Arab theater? Framing in specific roles and characters? How have you become embodied now?

Topics discussed by the Tunisian actress Fatima bin Saidan, the Egyptian actress Salwa Muhammad Ali, the Palestinian writer and actress Raeda Taha, and the Lebanese writer and actress Dima Matta.

Duniana Wednesday at 5:30 GMT and 7:30 Beirut time on BBC Arabic.
