“Anthropic AI: Developing an Ethical Chatbot with a Constitution”

2023-05-16 09:33:06

Founded by former OpenAI professionals, the company is such a unique “with a constitution” is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) capable of knowing what is good and what is bad with minimal human intervention.

The ethical behavior of Anthropic’s chatbot named Claude was inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The “constitution“, however, is more metaphorical, which, according to Jared Kaplan, co-founder of Anthropic, can also be interpreted as the fact that the bot adjusts its own behavior more closely to the constitution. Its training method is described in a research paper, where it shows how to create a “harmless” and useful AI that, following training, can improve itself without human feedback and recognize inappropriate behavior. Claude, which can process more information than ChatGPT, has been trained to even “treat even malicious interlocutors with dignity”.

Anthropic Claude reminds us that the development of artificial intelligence is not just a technological race, but a philosophical journey. Its ethical training encourages the chatbot to give answers that are consistent with its constitution – respecting freedom, equality and individual rights. But can an artificial intelligence consistently provide ethical answers? Kaplan believes that technology is much more advanced than many people think:

“It just works. The bot’s harmlessness improves as we progress through the process” – believes.
