A French study highlights the fact that one in five people is affected by sleep apnea. And many cases would go unnoticed.
L’Sleep Apnea is a disease as dangerous as it is pernicious. By definition, this phenomenon occurs when we sleep and for some patients, it is not diagnosed. A French study wanted to highlight the rate of people affected by this pathology without knowing it. The finding is quite worrying.
One in five people affected by sleep apnea
It is a group of INSERM researchers, whose study was published in the European Respiratory Journal, who looked at the actual prevalence of sleep apnea. They studied a cohort of 20,151 French people who were subjected to tests and questionnaires to detect the syndrome.
While 3.5% of study participants already knew they were affected by sleep apnea and benefited from specific monitoring, the researchers determined that in reality, 20% of those questioned suffered from this pathology. .
serious consequences
If the finding is worrying, it is above all because sleep apnea can quickly have serious repercussions on health if it is not diagnosed quickly. Stopping breathing repeatedly while sleeping reduces oxygenation in the body and promotes the onset of cardiovascular disease and hypertension. The risk of heart attack and stroke increases, as does the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
When to consult
For those responsible for the study, it is therefore important to consult as soon as the first symptoms appear. As a general rule, patients initially suffer from chronic fatigue with the impression of not being rested despite a seemingly good night’s sleep. Then, memory, mood, sexual or physical performance disorders and even the appearance of a depressive state should alert.
Although the syndrome seems to affect twice as many men as women and generally appears with age, the symptoms associated with it should not be overlooked, regardless of your age and gender. Many cases are also asymptomatic which makes diagnosis even more difficult.
