The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a drug that works to reduce symptoms of menopause such as particularly bothersome hot flashes.

This drug which is a pill to be taken daily is marketed by Astellas Pharma. It treats moderate to severe symptoms of menopause, including sweating, hot flashes and chills.
According to Timesthe drug called Veozah uses a new approach by targeting connections in the brain that help control body temperature.
The FDA considers the drug to provide “an additional safe and effective treatment option for women,” the organization said in a statement.
More than 80% of women suffer from hot flashes during menopause, when the body reduces its hormonal production, between the ages of 45 and 55.
Hormonal treatment is usually preferred to combat symptoms, by increasing hormone levels.
However, many women do not tolerate hormones well, and those with a history of stroke, blood clots, heart problems or other health conditions are at risk.
The new drug is not a hormone, but it also poses some risks, including potential liver damage.
Women who want to take this drug will need to be screened for liver damage or infection before getting a prescription, and then have a blood test every three months for nine months to watch for any problems.
The pharmaceutical has indicated that its drug will cost $550 per month.
