Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad arrived on Monday evening (May 15, 2023) at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, at the head of an official Syrian delegation to participate in the preparatory meetings for the Arab summit scheduled to be held on May 19, following an invitation the President had received. Syrian Bashar al-Assad from Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, to participate in the thirty-second session of the Arab League Council meeting at the summit level, following a break of 12 years.
In addition to Minister Faisal Al-Miqdad, the delegation includes: Minister of Information Boutros Al-Hallaq, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Ayman Soussan, and Director of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jamal Najib.
In a statement to reporters at the airport, Al-Miqdad said: “The title of this summit is joint Arab action, and we look forward to the future.” He added: “We express our happiness for our presence in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and we wish this summit every success. We are all exposed to it.”
Al-Miqdad added, “This is a new opportunity to tell our Arab brothers: We do not look to the past, but rather to the future. There are many challenges that we must discuss and mobilize our Arab forces to confront them, including the issue of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the climate issue.”
Al-Miqdad expressed his optimism regarding this summit, which is for all Arabs, and to face common challenges, adding: “We are ready to contribute with everyone to find a unified view to deal with our present and future.”
The Syrian delegation was received by Minister Plenipotentiary of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mazen bin Hamad Al-Hamli, and Ambassador Salman Al-Mutairi, from the Protocol Department of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Economic and Social Council of the Arab League held this morning a preparatory meeting at the ministerial level, with the participation of the Syrian delegation headed by the Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade, Dr. Muhammad Samer Al-Khalil. Other preliminary meetings will be held during the next two days.
It is worth noting that the last summit that Syria attended was the Sirte summit in Libya in 2010 before the global war that was fought in 2011, and then its membership in the League of Arab States was frozen in November of the same year, as Syria lived in diplomatic isolation. It was imposed by several Arab countries, led by Saudi Arabia.
