If you are one of the 4% of French people affected by sleep apnea, be careful. This sleep disorder, also called obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAS), would increase the risk of developing long covid, according to work published in the journal Sleep the 11th of 2023.
Sleep apnea greatly increases the risk of covid long
According to the study led by the RECOVER initiative of the National Institutes of Health (US government scientific research institutions), sleep apnea syndrome can significantly increase the risk of long covid in adults. The researchers reviewed the medical records of patients from 3 cohorts who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 between March 2020 and February 2022.
They found that the risk of having long-term symptoms of covid-19 in adults with OSAHS was significantly higher than in those without. Specifically, the work found that sleep disturbance might increase the risk by up to 75% in adults.
Sleep apnea and long covid: women have a higher risk
The study results also indicate that women with sleep apnea are at higher risk of having long covid. Their probability is increased by 89% once morest a higher risk of 59% for men.
In contrast, the risk of long covid disappears in children with sleep apnea when the researchers controlled for other risk factors, including obesity.
In a communiqué, the researchers call on patients with sleep apnea to be cautious, especially if they suffer from other risk factors such as obesity or respiratory problems. Researcher and study author Hannah Mandel advises: “People with sleep apnea who are infected with covid-19 should seek early treatment, pay attention to their symptoms, and get their vaccinations to reduce the risk of infection in the first place.”
