Gunshots Interrupt Mother’s Day Celebration in Bogotá’s Unicentro Shopping Center: Femicide and Attempted Suicide in the Aftermath

The normal bustle that was lived in the Unicentro shopping center, in Bogotá, within the framework of the celebration of the Mother’s Day in the country, was altered on Sunday, at 5:17 in the followingnoon, when shots were heards. In the midst of the panic, several people came out for safety, while the commercial premises closed their doors even with diners inside for safety.

What began to be reported first on social networks was confirmed by the authorities shortly following: Christian Camilo Rincón Díaz, who was dressed in a Mass Transportation System jacket and had a Group Seguridad SAS card, fired twice at his partner, Erika Aponte Lugo, 26 years old.

The woman was found inside the Jeno’s Pizza location where she worked as an assistant manager.

According to preliminary information from the authorities and witnesses to the event, the femicide occurred following an argument between the couple. The man then shot himself to kill himself.

Rincón was transferred to the Santa Fe clinic, where, At press time, he was hovering between life and death with a reserved diagnosis.

The TIEMPO Investigative Unit learned of information held by the CTI indicating that Rincón had been being prosecuted by the Soacha Mobility Secretariatfor transporting passengers without authorization on behalf of a well-known company in the area.

The man also appears in Army records as remiss, that is to say, he never showed up to fix his military situation.

The Bogotá Metropolitan Police reported that following the crime, they will proceed to verify if the woman, who did not live with the aggressor, had some type of protection measure, since he has a record of personal injuries, in 2021, and illegal restraint, in 2022.

The mayoress of Bogotá, Claudia López, pointed out that the femicide is under investigation, indicated that apparently the couple had already had discussions and rejected what happened.

“We regret this deplorable fact and that Mother’s Day is the most violent of the year in the entire countrywhich forces us to reflect and act as a society and institutions,” he said.

The Secretary of Security, Óscar Gómez Heredia, said that until last night and in the last 48 hours, more than 135 fights had been deactivated.

Although crime marred the celebration, the National Police delivered a preliminary report of a 47 percent reduction in homicides throughout the national territory compared to 2022 on this date.

“There are 50 lives saved so far this weekend”, said the institution.

General Carlos Fernando Triana, national chief of the National Police Service in charge, assured that more than 3,500 white and firearms have been seized and that 495 arrests have been made for different crimes throughout the country.

The officer reported 240 fewer accidents on the day compared to last year. The final report of the Mother’s Day celebration will be delivered this Monday.
