Red Bull stalwart Dr Helmut Marko has addressed the personnel situation related to AlphaTauri’s Nick de Vries.
De Vries has become a regular driver for AlphaTauri this season, but has yet to produce a clear result following the opening five races. And the other day, it was reported in some media that a driver change might break out because Daniel Ricciardo, a Red Bull reserve driver, had adjusted AlphaTauri’s seat.
The major media “ESPN” said, “The main purpose of Ricardo’s seat adjustment is tire testing, etc., and it is not intended to replace De Vries. Rather, Liam Lawson would be a more likely candidate.”
Dr Marko told F1 Insider that “for the time being, nothing will happen”. He has confirmed that De Vries will continue to be AlphaTauri’s regular driver.
“We have had a good discussion with De Vries and we understand the situation. Of course we told him that he needs to improve, and he is very aware of that and we strongly agree. ”
“Actually Tsunoda is doing great and I have to say that the gap with his teammates is too big.”
Dr. Marco speaks of his expectations for De Vries, even though he uses harsh words.
“To use a footballer’s term, Nick got a yellow card, but he didn’t get a red card. If we improve from here, we’ll be fine.”
And Dr. Marco completely denies rumors that Ricardo will be in charge of replacing De Vries. Rather, he revealed that Ayumu Iwasa, who competes in F2, is one of the candidates.
“We kind of assume the worst-case scenario for us, but we’re not going to put Ricciardo there. Rather, we’re talking regarding (Liam) Lawson and Iwasa for the future.”
Lawson is a Red Bull reserve and is also participating in the Japanese Super Formula this season. If the same player cannot participate, Ricardo will accompany F1, and the role of the reserve is rotating.
On the other hand, Iwasa has two wins in F2 this season and is fighting for the overall victory. In the 4th round in Baku, he did not get involved in the battle for victory, and in the overall ranking, he fell from the top to 3rd place, but among the F2 Red Bull Juniors, he is fighting in the closest position to F1.
As Dr. Marco said, if De Vries were to be replaced, Iwasa would certainly be one of the leading candidates.
Already “yellow carded” for 2023, De Vries will have to continue to show his talent at AlphaTauri.
On the other hand, even for Iwasa, who is competing in F2, in order to seize the chance to be promoted to F1, it is a major prerequisite to achieve a solid result in F2 this season and meet the conditions for obtaining a super license.
Although it is still too early to talk regarding next season’s personnel trends, the set of two Japanese drivers, Yuki Tsunoda and Ayumu Iwasa, as AlphaTauri’s regular drivers, is also quite realistic.
Tsunoda and De Vries in F1, and Iwasa in F2, will continue to keep an eye on the future.
