A survey commissioned by BFMTV and carried out by Elabe confirms the strong slowdown of consumers in the face of rising prices.

Skip the big brands

While the price of oil is on a downward slope, France is the only country in Europe in which gasoline is more expensive than before the war in Ukrainea situation that arouses the annoyance of motorists (but also of certain government ministers), another Elabe study for BFM TV indicates that 43% of French people have given up food purchases for financial reasons.

43% of French people have given up food purchases for financial reasons

This Thursday, the government announces that it will ask the large agri-food manufacturers to take on their margins to bring down inflation, indicated Bruno le Maire while threatening: “If ever the agro-food manufacturers refuse to enter into this negotiation, which obviously I cannot imagine, we will use all the instruments at our disposal, including the tax instrument, to recover margins which would be undue margins made on the backs of consumers“.

And the prices will have to fall sharply since consumers continue to restrict their spending to preserve their purchasing power as much as possible. Indeed, more than 8 respondents (81%) out of 10 say they have given up on one category of expenditure at least once in recent months (food, shopping, holidays, care, etc.).

Less meat (-43%), fish (-34%)…

Faced with these increases, French consumers are beginning to “consume differently“. Among the neglected departments and products were found: meat (-43%), fish (-34%), cakes and biscuits (-27%), organic products (-26%) and charcuterie (-26%). ). Another reflex: turn to cheaper products than before (44%) or by buying smaller quantities (30%) and putting brands aside.

The study also notes that the French have given up spending on shopping trips (53%, +2 points), movie theaterat the restaurant or bar (49%, -2 points) or departures on vacation or at the weekend (45%, -3).
