The reform of the collection and sorting of food waste, in application from this Monday, will not only upset the habits of Brussels households. The workers of the Brussels Cleanliness Agency (ABP) will also have to adapt. For the unions, the finding is unanimous: Greens, Reds and Blues believe that management and politics have not listened to their remarks.
The organizations say they expect very tough weeks for workers and have already filed strike notices. “We want to be ready to react if there is the slightest problem”, alert the CSC.
“The task will become harder”
During the presentation of the reform, the organizations gave unfavorable opinions. At the SLFP, we denounce a plan “ill-prepared”, Who “does not bode well”. “They put the cart before the horse and came through in force,” sighs the spokesman Michel Piersoul, for whom the “chess“Previous reforms have not served as a lesson.
Same story at the CGSP: “We had asked to postpone the reform, explains Muriel Di Martinelli, Federal Secretary. We also wanted the obligation of food sorting and the abolition of a collection of white bags per week in 10 municipalities not to be done at the same time. We have not been listened to. In the end, it is the collectors and sweepers who will be challenged by local residents who do not understand the too late and illegible communication around the reform.
Food waste: neighborhood compost, the solution for large families who have little space? “We must also limit waste”
The trade unionist is also worried regarding the health of the agents. “Sorting food waste should reduce the weight of white bags. We know full well that it will not be applied directly. So the agents who take care of the areas where a collection of white bags has been suppressed will see their task become more difficult. Similarly, the last teams that had one driver and three loaders will move to two loaders. It’s gonna be a mess.”
“Loss of Motivation”
At the CSC, we share all these concerns, adding a few points. “Night work is prohibited for the civil service in Brussels. Office (from Minister Alain Maron) told us that, legally for the APB, it was possible but we are waiting to receive their justification. We’re not going to let goassures Stéphane Vercauteren, CSC regional secretary. This reform, instead of having been able to help build it, we will suffer it. Number of kilometers, weight to carry? It will be a surprise. The switch to two chargers, which should have been exceptional during the covid period, is continuing. And we are going more and more towards the end of the ‘fini-fini’ (rule that agents can leave their work once it is completed, even if it happens before the end of their scheduled hours). It will induce a big loss of motivation among the workers.”
Reform of collections under fire from critics: “it will obviously be difficult”, admits Alain Maron
