“The History and Tradition of Belgian Palace Garden Parties”

This garden party is part of a dotted tradition of the Palace. The very first was held in 1881 in honor of the marriage of Princess Stephanie of Belgium to Archduke Rudolf of Austria. By the end of the 19th century, outdoor receptions had even become annual events reserved for high society.

However, they disappeared during the reign of Albert I, before finding new life in the time of Leopold III. King Baudouin had continued the tradition. King Albert II and Queen Paola had, for their part, organized two, in 2003 and 2009.

For this edition, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde had invited people from all over the Kingdom. The provincial governors, all present, had been responsible for selecting around fifty guests reflecting a particularity of Belgian society. The sovereigns had insisted that this choice reflect the diversity of the country and thus bring together people of different ages and backgrounds.
