US President Joe Biden spoke regarding the progress of negotiations with Congress to raise the national debt limit. According to Mr. Biden, the negotiations are moving forward, in the next two days more will be known regarding their progress.
“I think they’re moving forward… We’re not at the tipping point yet,” the president told reporters at Joint Naval Air Station Andrews (Archyde.com quote). “We will learn more in the next two days,” he said.
At the beginning of next week, the resumption of negotiations on the national debt ceiling is expected, Joe Biden will meet with the speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy and other leaders of Congress.
The presidential administration and the Republicans entered into negotiations on the national debt at the beginning of the year, as the US might default in June. On May 1, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen recalled this in a letter to Mr. McCarthy. After 43 US Republican senators refused to approve the increase in the national debt ceiling.
While Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the administration failed to resolve the issue, the last time the US national debt reached the legal ceiling was in January 2023.
