The National Health Service NHS in England is now offering free self-tests for hepatitis C. As the organization announced on Saturday, the tests can be ordered online.
NHS patients can then draw a small drop of blood from their fingertip, which is sent to the lab for analysis. If the result is positive, the person concerned will then be contacted for treatment, the message said.
The virus hepatitis C (HCV) can cause life-threatening liver diseases and cancer. The pathogen is usually transmitted through contact with contaminated blood, for example when injecting drugs. Sexual transmission is also possible. One might also have come into contact with the virus through blood transfusions before 1990, through medical treatments or through getting tattoos abroad, the statement said.
Some consequences of the disease often only appear many years later. The goal is to be the first country in the world to eradicate hepatitis C, said Executive Director of the Hepatitis C Trust, Rachel Helford.
