“Traffic Accidents in Germany Surge in January 2023: Latest Statistics and Analysis”

In January 2023, almost 23,000 people were injured in traffic accidents in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was eight percent or almost 1800 people more than in the same month last year. The number of traffic fatalities rose by eleven to 158. Compared to January 2020, the last January before the corona pandemic, there were 47 traffic fatalities and around 2900 injuries (minus eleven percent) fewer. Overall, the police recorded around 190,900 road accidents in the first month of the year. That is 14,100 or eight percent more than in the previous year. People were injured or killed in around 18,100 accidents, which was seven percent or 1,200 accidents with personal injury more than in January 2022. The number of accidents in which there was property damage rose by around 172,800 (+8% / +12,800 ). (awm)
