He was considered one of the oldest wild lions in the world. But since Wednesday evening, Loonkiito is no more. While trying to feed in the village of Olkelunyiet, Kenya, the animal was killed by herders who wanted to protect their livestock.
The Lion Guardians association pays tribute to him: “He was a symbol of resilience and coexistence. We at Lion Guardians feel privileged to have witnessed his life and legacy. In the weeks and months that follow, we hope to share Loonkiito’s extraordinary life story with the world.”
Loonkiito was 19 years old. On average, such an animal lives regarding 13 years in nature.
