The governments of the two countries have taken a new step in their bilateral relations to move forward in an era that is intended to be “strategic”, following the meeting led by the heads of government of the two countries in Lisbon.
They agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to the level of a global strategic association on the basis of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1994 and the instruments of bilateral cooperation, according to the final declaration of the meeting.
“We are two pivotal countries between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, between Africa and Europe and that is why, during this summit, we decided to raise our level of relations to the level of strategic association. , in order to have greater cooperation, not only from the point of view of relations between our peoples and our companies, but also at the political level, between the two governments,” said Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa.
Costa also highlighted the joint commitment to increase maritime communications, the ability to make “a decisive contribution to accelerating the challenge of energy transition” and to strengthen the geostrategic position “within the framework of the Atlantic”. .
This partnership, according to the outcome document of the meeting, “will be built through the strengthening of a permanent political dialogue”, with the promotion of high-level visits and bilateral agreements on issues of common interest, both political , economic and climatic.
Support for the Moroccan Sahara autonomy plan
The situation in the Moroccan Sahara also hovered over the Lisbon meeting. In the final declaration, Portugal reiterated “its support for the process led by the United Nations for a political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution for the parties”.
In addition, Portugal reiterates its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, which it considers to be a realistic, serious and credible solution proposal, approved within the framework of the United Nations.
“I cannot help but thank Portugal for its position, which has always supported the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and for the autonomy initiative, which we consider a realistic solution to resolve this artificial conflict on the Sahara,” said Aziz Akhennouch.
