As his club Manchester City announced on Friday, more than 80 percent of the more than 800 members of the “Football Writers’ Association” voted for the 22-year-old striker. The ex-Salzburger Haaland, who switched from Dortmund to ManCity before the current season, has scored 35 goals in 34 league games so far.
The exceptional striker thus surpassed the record set by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole (34 each) before the end of the season. At the same time, he surpassed the record for most goals by a Premier League player in all competitions in a season with 51 goals. Mohamed Salah and Ruud van Nistelrooy (44 each) had previously held these together.
“Winning the Football Writers’ Award in my first season in English football is an honour. I try to do my best every day and this recognition means a lot to me,” said Haaland, who coached Pep Guardiola thanked the whole team and the coaching staff. “Everyone has been so good to me since I’ve been here and I’ve never worked with such top professionals.”
After Jürgen Klinsmann (1995), Gianfranco Zola (1997) and Ruben Dias (2021), Haaland is only the fourth player to receive the award in his debut season.
