ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) — FIFA’s unpaid wages fund helped 225 players in the latest round of payments, including 61 in Portugal and 50 in Greece, world soccer’s governing body said Friday.
The FIFA Fund for Soccer Players, endowed with 16 million dollars, was created in 2020 with the players’ union FIFPRO. It was suspected that some clubs closed to avoid paying the payroll to reappear later like a “phoenix”.
FIFA has earmarked $4 million for financial aid applications for the 2021 calendar year.
The payments included those made to 22 footballers on the payroll of the Greek club Doxa Drama, as well as 19 from CD Aves and 18 from Uniao da Madeira, both Portuguese.
In China, there were cases in Shanghai Shenxin, Beijing Renhe, Taizhou Yuanda and Guangdong South China Tiger.
“As it is deeply frustrating for players not to receive their salaries, we are pleased that the FIFA (fund) is once once more providing them with a safety net to ensure they receive part of what they are owed,” said FIFPRO’s legal director. , Roy Vermeer, in a statement.
According to FIFA, the initiative has helped 1,370 footballers and another four million dollars have been set aside for a final application cycle in 2022.
