Looking back on his years at the Liverpool academy, English right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold lamented in an interview with the BBC all the pressure put on football players from an early age.

“Every year you fight for a contract, you fight for your dream.” In a long interview for the BBC published this Friday, Trent Alexander-Arnold looks back on his years at the Liverpool training center and all the pressure it generated. The right side of the Reds denounces all the issues placed very early on the shoulders of young people.

“A lawyer does not fight to be a lawyer from the age of six”

Arriving at the Liverpool academy as a six-year-old in 2004, the England international managed to go through every step until he became a first-team player in 2016. “Every year you fight for a contract , you’re fighting for your dream. I think it’s quite rare to see that in an industry. A lawyer doesn’t fight to be a lawyer from the age of six and think, ‘If I’m not enough well, next year I won’t be able to do that anymore'”, he explains with a smile.

“I think every year just this pressure of having that dream taken away from me and it being someone else’s decision, it’s crazy. These clubs are asking way too much of young players at the age 6 years old. These academies are not even prepared to help the players following the fact. It’s really a mistake.”

“I find it a bit sad”

“When I think back to my years at the academy I smile because I had a good time, I enjoyed it and it got me where I needed to be. I remember growing up as a player, as a person. I gave everything, sacrificed everything and it was worth it. But there were 15 or 16 other guys, who did the exact same thing as me and who didn’t get what they wanted. wanted. I find it a bit sad, honestly. I hope to be able to bring regarding a good change in football on this subject.”
