“NJ Transit Rail Service Disrupted: Portal Bridge Signal Problems Cause Delays and Limited Service”

NEW YORK — NJ Transit is operating “limited” rail service with long delays to and from NY Penn Station due to signal problems at the Portal Bridge, NJ Transit said.

PATH is honoring NJ Transit train tickets at Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd St-NY stations, as well as NJ Transit buses and private buses, according to the transit agency.

Midtown Direct service has been diverted to Hoboken.

It is unclear how the delays will affect the followingnoon rush hour as, according to NJ Transit, there is no estimate for full service restoration.

The limited rail service comes following NJ Transit trains were suspended for hours Thursday due to ongoing bridge issues.

NJ Transit and Amtrak are replacing the two-way Portal Bridge built in 1910 over the Hackensack River with a taller bridge that won’t have to open and close for river traffic, according to the NJ Transit website.

“Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bridge carried more than 450 Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT trains a day and 200,000 passengers a day over the Hackensack River, a critical link in the congested territory between Newark, New Jersey and Penn Station, New York. “. NJ Transit said.

However, NJ Transit notes that the bridge has, over the years, become a “serious bottleneck and source of delay, particularly when the aging bridge malfunctions during the opening and closing of ship traffic.”
