It is the nightmare of millions of people. With more than a month to go from the start of summer, mosquitoes are regarding to make their big comeback and risk, once once more, preventing us from fully enjoying the evenings outdoors. But good news, a new trick to get rid of it has emerged.
Swatters, citronella, mosquito repellent bracelets: you’ve tried everything and yet nothing works. Mosquitoes still invite themselves into your home and seem even more resistant than before. Faced with this observation, many scientists wanted to find THE effective way to repel mosquitoes. And by looking into the matter, they would have discovered a miracle product. According to their findings, reported in the New York Postcoconut might be the magic perfume to get rid of it.
To reach this conclusion, researchers from Virginia Tech University analyzed the chemical odors emitted by four human participants before and following washing with four brands of soap, Dial, Dove, Native and Simple Truth.
“It is remarkable that the same individual who is extremely attractive to mosquitoes when unwashed can become even more attractive to mosquitoes with one soap and then become repellent or mosquito repellent with another soap,” said lead author and neuroethologist Clément Vinauger.

Concretely, the participants washed one arm with the soap and left the other intact, covering it with a nylon sleeve. The process was repeated for each soap. Then, following an hour, the researchers placed the nylon sleeve in a mesh-covered cup filled with adult female mosquitoes. And the results were final.
Washing with Dove and Simple Truth soaps increased the mosquitoes’ attractiveness to the volunteers while native soap tended to repel them. One of the chemicals associated with repellency is a key coconut-flavored component of American bourbon. “This confirms what previous studies have found, that mosquitoes don’t like coconut-scented products.”he added while specifying that they intended to test more varieties of soap from now on.
