Trump: Republicans should trigger debt default if budget isn’t cut

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday urged Republican lawmakers to refuse to raise the U.S. debt ceiling, triggering a default if Democrats in the same party as President Joe Biden disagree with spending cuts.

Trump will be competing in the 2024 presidential election and is the leading candidate in the Republican Party. “I’m going to say to the Republican Congressmen and Senators that if they don’t agree to your big spending cuts, you’re going to have to default on your debt,” he said on CNN Live.

Removal of the so-called debt ceiling in the United States is often routine. But Republicans, who won a majority in the House of Representatives in last year’s midterm elections, are concerned regarding budget spending and have vowed to raise the current $31.4 trillion cap only if spending limits are in place.

But Trump also said on CNN’s “symposium” that he thinks that is unlikely to happen.

“I don’t think they’re going to do it because I think the Democrats are absolutely going to give in because people don’t want that to happen,” he said. “But it’s better than what we’re doing because we’re spending so much money on drunk soldiers.”
