After Vienna, Linz and Salzburg, the successful model of the mobile intervention force is also coming to Styria
Graz (OTS) – Fast help in the event of accidents, breakdowns or other traffic obstructions – the Traffic Managers from ASFINAG have already proven themselves in many ways and ensure fewer traffic jams and more traffic safety. The successful model, which has existed in Vienna for ten years and in Linz and Salzburg for a few years, will also be extended to Styria on May 22nd. Two employees and ten employees will be on the road for more than 100 kilometers of the A 2 south and A 9 Pyhrnautobahn to help if the worst comes to the worst. The support area extends to the sections between the junctions Gleisdorf-Süd and Mooskirchen as well as Gratkorn-Süd and Spielfeld on the border with Slovenia. The team is stationed in the Plabutsch traffic management center and is therefore right next to the longest twin-tube road tunnel in Austria.
“Better traffic flow in Graz is one of the most important goals for us as a mobility partner,” said ASFINAG Managing Director Heimo Maier-Farkas at the presentation in Graz. “Our new Traffic Managers are therefore a simple but efficient answer to the increasing challenges in the Graz metropolitan area. Every minute counts when it comes to reducing the duration of motorway closures or lane closures, especially during rush hours.”
The traffic managers will concentrate on improving the often tense traffic situation on the motorways in Graz, especially in the area of the Plabutsch tunnel. Because with peak values of more than 70,000 vehicles on the A 2 between Graz-Ost and Graz-West or more than 50,000 vehicles a day at the Plabutsch tunnel on the A 9 Pyhrnautobahn, even a small problem has a major impact on the state capital. Rapid breakdown and accident assistance in combination with immediate information to the ASFINAG traffic management center Plabutsch are the core tasks of the twelve traffic managers – and crucial to keep the traffic flowing and the negative effects within limits.
The concept of a motorway unit trained in all traffic, legal and operational matters has proven itself in Austria since 2013. In Upper Austria, for example, the duration of disruptions due to breakdowns was reduced by an average of 25 percent, or 15 minutes less each time, in the first year.
The traffic managers were trained in traffic law (e.g. road traffic regulations), various legal and official issues, securing danger spots, construction site management, firefighting and professional first aid as part of their multi-week training in Graz at the safety academy of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
Specially branded emergency vehicles from ASFINAG, equipped with TETRA radio and portable PCs, will be on the route. Furthermore, oil binding agents, safety material, starter boxes and a wide variety of tools are just as much a part of the equipment as the “classic” route service equipment. An emergency ration of fuel is often enough to enable you to continue driving if you run out of fuel.
