KaThe Child Rights Commission has ordered that seat belts and baby seats should be made compulsory for children. The police and the motor vehicle department have been instructed to take strict action once morest those who violate the law.

If there are children in the vehicle, the message ‘Child on Board’ should be affixed on the windshield. Children under 13 must sit in the back seat of the car. A baby seat should be installed for children under two years of age. Necessary amendments should be incorporated in the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules for strict compliance of the directives.

This has already been suggested by the Motor Vehicle Department to ensure the safety of children in vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Department has recommended that children above 14 years of age use seat belts and children below 14 years of age should use seat belts or child restraint systems according to their body size to ensure safety.

In addition, the trend of driving with babies on laps is fraught with danger. This must be avoided. It is best to travel with children in the back seat whenever possible. Avoid sitting on your lap. Child lock must be used when children are present. It is also advisable to practice the Dutch reach method (opening the left door with the right hand) for opening the door.

Just as seat belts are mandatory for children in cars, helmets and safety belts are mandatory for children in two-wheelers. Children above the age of four are considered as one passenger. Therefore, it has been suggested in the 2019 amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act that these children must wear helmets.
